Mariah’s Story

Mariah’s Studio continues the legacy of Mariah Elizabeth Gaughan, a gifted potter who shared her talent and love of the art through teaching. In addition to her creative pursuits, Mariah was a Master Gardener and gourmet chef, who loved hiking, open-water scuba diving, and summers at her family compound in Oak Grove, Angola, NY.  Mariah thrived in her first calling as a Career Counselor with the University of Southern Maine, The University of South Carolina and Newberry College helping thousands of students find their first professional career.

Mariah was an intrepid explorer, making friends throughout Ireland, France, Turkey, the Caribbean, West Africa, Central America and Japan. While volunteering at the Columbia Art Center in South Carolina, she developed great respect for the therapeutic benefits of art. Sadly, this work and her time with us was cut short by ovarian cancer. She is remembered for inspiring her students to take their art further than they thought they were capable of, and in so doing join a community of artists with passion for the arts and a deep respect for one another. All that knew Mariah were touched by her love of life and vibrant spirit.
